Healthcare organizations like the American College of Radiology, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure advise every woman over 40 (earlier with a family history of breast cancer) have an annual screening mammogram.

A screening 3D mammogram significantly increases the chances of detecting most anomalies at their earliest stage. This is exactly why our practice subscribes to these recommendations and offers in-office 3D mammography to every qualifying patient.

Most experts in women’s health agree with having a mammogram at 40+ years of age. That is still the gold standard for breast health.

What are dense breasts and why does it matter?

Women with dense breasts are also at an increased risk of getting breast cancer. Put simply, breasts contain glandular, connective, and fat tissue. Dense breasts have relatively high amounts of glandular and connective tissue with relatively low amounts of fatty breast tissue. Studies show nearly half of all women over 40 have dense breasts. This can make it harder to find cancer and more difficult to read a mammogram.

What makes the GE ABUS breast ultrasound different?

  • Mammography may miss more than a third of cancers in dense breast and the ABUS, when used in addition to mammography, can improve breast cancer detection by 37.5%
